The olive is one of the oldest symbols in the world and one of the most significant in the Mediterranean. That's something completely natural because it is deeply connected to our society from the ancient times.
It is a variety that we exclusively find in Lesvos and that's why some people call it "Mytilinia". Kolovi, covers the biggest part of the olive cultivation on the island, and that's why our groves carry a special indication of geographical position.
Today we celebrate something so fundamental, that most of the times we take for granted and neglect. Water covers 70% of our earth and quenches our soil so that life can flourish! We protect our water from pollution and never spoil it, because it helps our trees grow and it's the basic element of our very existence!
Carnival traditions in Greece are a living thing. Their origins go way back in Greek history, as one of the oldest forms of rites devoted to fertility and nature. The word Apokria, as Greeks call it, literally means ¨without meat¨, and it’s associated with the Orthodox Lent period that follows.
For many people this is the ultimate Greek food! For others it is considered a meal full of vitamins and high nutrinional value. It satisfies one’s hunger and at the same time benefits our health. All the above are elements of the Greek bean soup, the so called “Fasolada”.
Olive oil making in Lesvos Island goes back to the Bronze Age. From the early days of harvesting and olive oil production, the ancient Greeks considered the olive tree to be of divine origin and that clearly states its great value and significance.
Both Unesco and the International Olive Council, have chosen November 26 to be World’s Olive Tree Day.
Our olive trees are more than ready to offer their fruits and their branches long for some relief!
